Tremor-prone Karachi not ready to cope any disaster
KARACHI: After a deadly earthquake killed up to 300 people in Balochistan, seismologists fear a similar tremor could strike Karachi, an abode of 14 million people. Deep beneath the bustling port city, the Indian, Arabian and Eurasian tectonic plates are in constant friction, with the potential to wreak havoc above. As a result, seismologists say Karachi is as much at risk from earthquakes as Los Angeles. But unlike the sprawling US west coast city, or other super cities lying on or near faultlines, Pakistan's business capital is ill-equipped to cope if disaster strikes, according to experts.
