Suicide bombers for hire (25122008)
According to investigations of Punjab police CID, suicide bombers are now available and being used for settling personal disputes. This came to light in investigation of a suicide bomb blast at the house of an MNA in Bhakkar. Pakistan has enough problems and none unknown to the rulers and the people alike, but the complexity of the problem and its implications are getting deeper and deeper. It was bad enough to have people ready to blow themselves up for a cause they fervently believed in, it is infinitely worse to have people sell themselves as a suicide bomber. What we have is utter desperation of the people, ordinary people of Pakistan. So far we have no evidence to suggest that any of the bombers belong to an affluent family. With the exception of Osama Bin Laden and a few others who were alleged to be master minds and organisers, all the other people involved are, as mentioned before, ordinary people of Pakistan. We have a situation borne out of poverty, lack of employment, lack of hope and disillusionment with the system that has led to the situation that exists today. The government needs to address this situation on an emergency basis; to begin with "the suicide merchants", who are involved in recruiting, training and now marketing these human bombs need to be put out of business and made an example of. However, blanket bombings of religious seminaries or their suspected hide outs is not the solution, that will only compound the problem. It is generally believed that Pakistan's intelligence agencies are sophisticated enough and have deep penetration in these organisations to effectively dismantle and put these merchants of death out of business. But this is part of the solution. The reasons why people become suicide bombers need to be addressed, as well as, the factors that lead to using suicide bombers. People become suicide bombers because of, generally speaking, economic desperation and disillusionment and ignorance of religion. Therefore, the government must take measures to address the issue of the plight of the poor and give them a stake in the system. The traditional way of doing that is to promote investment in the country that can generate employment. But that aside, the government also needs to provide a stronger and bigger safety net for the people too, which does not exist at present. The other way to achieve this is forced distribution or rather redistribution of wealth, through a system of taxation. Only by improving the taxation system and achieving a better and more even distribution of wealth combined with a strong system of law enforcement can we move forward to tackle this menace of suicide bombers.
